Eight months ago InsuraGen Now, the insurance company using A.I. to set insurance policies (but not prices), made the bold decision to lay off all 20 developers at the company and replace them with a small team of 4 vibe coders. Now that the experiment has proven just how much money they saved by reducing the team size, they've done it again. This time they laid off all 4 vibe coders and promoted Floyd The Manager to be the sole vibe coder at the company, while keeping his managerial duties of course.
"I feel bad all the developers are gone, but I'm so productive with A.I. we don't need them anymore. I spent an hour last week using with something called Claude, and got her to make a version of Pac-Man where you chase the ghosts. My kids loved it," said Floyd The Manager, the sole member left from development team who quickly admits he has no software development experience. "I haven't worked on any other projects yet, and there's a lot I have to learn. But I'm up to the challenge. I'll be talking all about null pointers, and complaining about pythons in no time."
Speaking with the first executive at the company who would meet with us shed more light on the plan. "To maximize his productivity we will pay for the highest tier license of whatever tool Floyd The Manager chooses to vibe with. Unfortunatly this means we won't be able to give him a raise. But we did let him keep the title of manager, even though his duties are closer to a developer now. Otherwise we'd have to lay him off too, and then I'd be vibe coding! And no one wants that." At which point he began to slowly shake his head and repeat, "No one wants that," while walking away.
InsuraGen Now has released some numbers to justify consolidating the teams down to a single person. Since they already have numbers from replacing the original 20 developers with 4 vibe coders, they estimate saving an additional half million dollars a year with this latest gambit. This includes time saved from unnecesary meetings like daily standups, weekly 1 on 1s, and HR trainings.
